A 36-year-old man from Rajasthan was allegedly beaten to death by his wife’s family over their interfaith marriage in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district earlier this week, police said.
Police said Rajendra Saini was allegedly beaten to death on Monday after he tried to convince his in-laws to let his wife, Amreen, return as she had been staying at her mother's home for the last two months following a fight with him.
Three members of woman's family — father Mumtaz Khan (55), mother Munni Khan (52) and brother Salman Khan (19) — have been booked under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, police said.
Saini had met Amreen Khan (20) at a construction site in Khandwa after which their relationship started, his family members said. The two had to face pressure over religion following which they decided to get married at a Jaipur court.
“They were barely making ends meet. There was a lot of pressure on them,” said Rajendra's brother Kishore Saini.
“It was a love marriage and there was a lot of pressure on them. She had fought with him over some issue and decided to return to her family. Her husband was trying to convince her to return when the incident took place,” said investigating officer SI Hari Kishan Soni.
“We have questioned the family members and based on their disclosure statements we are preparing our case. No one from the locality is ready say anything regarding the murder and the events leading up to it. The family has been sent to judicial custody now,” the SI said.
